The Science of Groove

ft. Bex Burch of Vula Viel!

Fringe Orchestra is an annual collaboration between Fluid Orchestra and the Conservatoire of Maastricht. Made up of the conservatoire’s students and alumni, the line-up combines three conventional formations: Symphony Orchestra, Big Band and Electric Band. In the Science of Groove Fringe Orchestra enters the periphery of Afro, jazz, punk and electro. Composer Jesse Passenier (arranger Metropole Orchestra, winner of the Rogier of the Otterloo Award 2017) and Bex Burch (Vula Viel) co-write music for the orchestra using principles extracted out of the Science of Groove. This is done with Burch herself on her characteristic gyil (Ghanaian Xylophone) and guest roles for trumpeter Carlo Nardozza (Henri Texier, Brussels Jazz Orchestra) and scratch-DJ Vindictiv (De La Soul, Wayne Shorter). On stage is where the Fringe Orchestra feels at home, inspired by live acts from now, like Ezra Collective, STUFF. and Snarky Puppy. Fringe Orchestra dares, grunges, makes dance, overwhelms and inspires. The border is where it happens.
